A MAN who was caught attempting to smuggle clothes soaked in liquid crystal meth with a street value of more than BD60,000 has been pardoned by a court for helping the police make further arrests.
He will now only face six months in jail for using the drugs.
As a result of information received from the 37-year-old Pakistani, officers were able to prevent three kilos of the drug, locally known as shabu, being smuggled into the country, according to court documents.
The man was arrested at Bahrain International Airport in March after acting suspiciously.
Airport officials ran his luggage through an X-ray machine and found clothes soaked in drugs in a suitcase.
The defendant led detectives to two fellow nationals who he was supposed to give the clothes to. One aged, 30, has been jailed for three years for selling drugs and the other, aged 33, for six months for using narcotics.
“The defendant was pardoned from smuggling drugs because he helped police arrest his co-defendants,” read the court ruling. “The court pardoned him because he helped set up the sting operation to catch the culprits.”
Earlier the court heard the 37-year-old defendant had taken BD700 in return for trying to smuggle more than BD60,000 worth of the drugs into the country.
“I come from a poor family in Pakistan,” he told prosecutors. “I needed money to survive and smuggling drugs was my only option.
“I met a man in Pakistan and he said that he ran a drug trafficking ring. He said he would give me BD700 if I agreed to smuggle shabu into Bahrain.”
All three will be deported after completing their sentences, the High Criminal Court ruled yesterday.
