A WOMAN who attempted to smuggle BD60,000 worth of marijuana into the country has been jailed for 15 years.
The 25-year-old Cameroonian was found guilty of the charges by the High Criminal Court, which also fined her BD5,000.
She was arrested at Bahrain International Airport in September after authorities suspected her behaviour. Officials searched her baggage and found narcotics hidden beneath dried prawns and vegetables.
“The woman travelled to Bahrain on September 10 and was arrested at the airport,” read the court ruling.
“Authorities found drugs in her luggage after running it through an X-ray machine.”
The woman initially denied knowledge of the narcotics. However, she later admitted to using drugs to treat her neck pain.
“I really did not know I had drugs in my luggage,” she earlier told prosecutors.
“A friend in Cameroon gave dried prawns and vegetables and asked me to give it to another person in Bahrain.
“However, I was stopped at the airport and officials found marijuana in my luggage. I did not know that I had the drug, which I generally use only to treat my neck pain.”
The woman will be deported after completing her sentence.
