A proposal to grant housing beneficiaries a BD3,000 loan to furnish and equip their units with essential items, such as appliances and furniture, will be debated and voted on during the weekly Parliament session on Tuesday.
It has been proposed by five MPs, led by Parliament’s public utilities and environment affairs committee vice-chairman Bader Al Tamimi. It aims to ease the financial strain on low-income Bahraini citizens and enable them to move into newly-allotted government homes with ease.

MPs claim that the loan is a need of the hour following the current economic challenges and rising living costs burdening citizens.
The Housing and Urban Planning Ministry clarified that offering financing for furnishing housing units does not fall under its constitutional or legal mandate.
It highlighted several measures already in place to support citizens receiving new houses.
“Beneficiaries are given a six-month grace period before their first housing service instalment is deducted,” the ministry said in writing. “They continue to receive a housing allowance for three months after moving into their units to help ease the transition.
“The ministry has also partnered with companies and retail outlets to provide beneficiaries with discount vouchers for furniture and household essentials.”
“The partnerships and discount programmes specifically target the furnishing needs of beneficiaries,” it said. “We are committed to support low-income citizens, but furniture loans are beyond our legal scope.”
