An event was held to raise awareness on the importance of protecting marine life, especially coral reefs, amidst the escalating challenges posed by climate change across the region.
Scientists and young environmental advocates took part in the dialogue, titled Bahar Talks: Oceans in the Spotlight, organised by Bahrain Scientific Centre for Sustainable Development Goals – an initiative of the Youth Affairs Ministry, in co-operation with the French Embassy in Bahrain.
It opened with a screening of the acclaimed French documentary Tara, the Coral Odyssey, directed by Pierre de Parscau (2017) and produced by Fondation Tara Océan.
The film showcased the foundation’s scientific expedition in the Pacific Ocean, focusing on the study of coral reef ecosystems and the mounting impacts of climate change on these fragile habitats.
An engaging panel discussion was held, moderated by Aisha Al Shurooqi, Sustainable Development Programme specialist and vice president of the Arab Youth Council for Climate Change. It was centred on Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water, and explored local and international strategies for marine protection.
A diverse line-up of experts and activists participated in the panel, including marine biologist and founder of Nawaa Organisation Dr Reem Al Mulla, head of the Bahrain Volunteer Diving Team and chief executive of the 2025 Bahrain International Marine Life Expo Khalid Al Saeed, environmental specialists and marine biologists Sylvain Crozet and Rahma Al Eskafi, and youth activist and Bahrain’s delegate to the Ocean Conference Fatima Al Zaki.
They stressed the need to empower youth, launch grassroots environmental initiatives and strengthen international co-operation to address the challenges posed by climate change.
A key focus was the critical importance of coral reef preservation, which serves as a cornerstone of marine biodiversity and a frontline defence against climate-related damage to oceanic ecosystems. “The Bahar Talks initiative reflects Bahrain’s commitment to environmental sustainability and highlights the pivotal role of youth in shaping a more resilient, eco-conscious future for the kingdom and beyond,” a statement said.
