The Bahrain Recruiters Society has urged authorities to open new recruitment markets following the Philippines’ decision to raise the minimum wage of its domestic workers from $400 to $500 a month, alongside stricter conditions, our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej reported.
The society warned that the 26 per cent increase would heavily impact Bahraini households, calling instead for a moderate rise of 10 to 15pc.
Recruitment costs for Ethiopian domestic workers have also risen to between BD850 and BD950, while some newly opened markets, such as Uganda, Ghana, Tanzania and Kenya, offer fees of around BD650. Salaries in these countries range between BD80 and BD110 depending on experience.
Speaking to Akhbar Al Khaleej, citizens noted that Filipino domestic workers are the most in demand among Bahraini households.
However, they warned that such decisions could lead to a decline in future demand if balance is not maintained between the rights and obligations of both workers and employers.
