In today’s fast-paced, digital-driven world, it’s becoming increasingly common for people to prioritise scrolling over reading.
With constant access to social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, we find ourselves consuming bite-sized content instead of diving into books, newspapers, and in-depth articles.
While technology has its undeniable benefits, I believe it’s more important than ever to remind ourselves of the value of reading – not just as a pastime, but as a tool for enriching the mind and fostering connection.
Reading helps us process and understand the world around us more deeply.
It introduces new ideas, expands our knowledge, and sharpens our critical thinking skills. Furthermore, it broadens our vocabulary and improves our ability to communicate. In short, reading nurtures our minds in ways that scrolling through apps simply cannot.
However, the rise of short-form content has inadvertently shortened our attention spans, making it harder to sit down and read for extended periods. The quick rewards from a TikTok video or an Instagram reel can be addictive, and often, they replace the depth and focus that reading once required.
While technology can offer many conveniences, it cannot replace the mental and emotional benefits that come from immersing ourselves in a book. By choosing to read, even for just a few minutes a day, we actively nourish our brains and cultivate personal growth.
I encourage everyone to take a step back from mindless scrolling and pick up a book.
Whether it’s at a library, a book club, or just in the comfort of your own bed, challenge yourself to make reading a regular habit. Imagine how much richer our society would be if more people embraced reading as a means of connection, understanding and growth.
Let’s rediscover the power of the written word - one page at a time.
