A proposal encouraging motorists to install dashboard cameras in their vehicles to enhance road safety, accountability and transparency in case of incidents is set for debate during Parliament’s weekly session on Tuesday.
The foreign affairs, defence and national security committee has recommended approval of the proposal submitted by MP Dr Mariam Al Dhaen, a member of the Strategic Thinking Bloc.
According to the committee, the initiative aims to serve the public interest by addressing several issues, including:
- Preventing manipulation and deception in traffic accident claims where no witnesses or CCTV footage are available.
- Deterring fraudulent or staged road accidents, thus protecting insurance companies from false claims.
- Enhancing self-monitoring and promoting public and private deterrence.
- Reducing reckless and aggressive driving behaviour on the roads.
The Interior Ministry said there were no legal barriers preventing motorists from installing dash cams in their vehicles.
However, such recordings must respect individual privacy and must not be published on social media or other public platforms without authorisation, it added.
Dr Al Dhaen said the proposal was a preventive and accountability-enhancing measure designed to support fair investigation and justice in road-related disputes.
“Dash cams can prevent innocent people from being blamed in accidents and can also protect insurance firms from fraudulent claims,” she added.
“More importantly, it will encourage responsible driving and transparency.”
Committee chairman Hassan Bukhammas described the initiative as “a step towards smarter, safer roads”.
“The dash cams will not only help motorists protect themselves legally but will also act as a deterrent to reckless driving,” he said.
Meanwhile, MPs are also scheduled to debate the following:
- Launching a specialised industrial area for pharmaceutical products.
- Constructing a walkway in the Southern Governorate constituency seven.
- Allocating a premise for women’s activities at the Al Kharjiya Village Civil Society in Sitra.
- Allowing Kuwara residents, a village nearby Tubli, to use the Tubli Primary School for Boys football pitch off school hours.
- Building a new intermediate school for boys in Busaiteen.
- Naming one of the streets in Manama after the late Shaikh Ibrahim Al Saad.
- Increase green spaces on King Hamad Highway and Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah Highway.
