A Bahraini artist’s tribute to a pioneering local project recently captivated visitors at a leading arts institution in the UAE.
Buthaina Shaheen, an employee at the Municipalities and Agriculture Affairs Ministry, took part in an exhibition at the Fujairah Fine Arts Academy, where she showcased her painting of a water misting project along a walkway in the Southern Governorate.
The work, titled ‘Art between Humans and Machines’, depicts Bahrain’s first sprinkler system for cooling public outdoor spaces implemented on Isa Town’s rubberised walking track by the Southern Municipality.
It operates using fine water mist to provide a refreshing environment for pedestrians and is regarded as a pioneering project in applying environmentally friendly cooling systems in public facilities across the country.
Speaking to the GDN, Ms Shaheen expressed her love for art, especially paintings that focus on nature.
“I have always loved creating paintings that highlight the relationship between people and nature,” said Ms Shaheen.
“So when I heard about the UAE exhibition, I wanted to do something related to that concept, and also showcase one of the Southern Governorate’s achievements.
“When I remembered the sprinkler system at the Isa Town walkway, I thought it would be a great idea as it perfectly encapsulates the harmony between humans, machines, and nature.
“The machines play an integral role as they not only water the plants but also cool down the area’s temperature, giving people much-needed relief during the summer months.
“I knew this was the perfect opportunity to showcase the achievements of the ministry and Southern Municipality while creating meaningful art.”
Ms Shaheen has been an art lover since childhood, with her earliest drawing dating back to about three years old. She honed her skills over the years and has won awards and trophies for her artistic prowess.
She now not only creates artwork using oil paints, acrylics, charcoal and pencil, but also practices calligraphy and paints on pine wood.
She has made portraits of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and of Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty King Hamad and Supreme Council for Women president.
She is happy that her latest artwork has been received positively and with curiosity by visitors at the Fujairah Fine Arts Academy.
“They loved the artwork overall, and I have received very positive feedback,” said Ms Shaheen.
“Some visitors were surprised that we even had such a system in Bahrain, and they loved the idea. It has been a wonderful experience showcasing artwork that I am truly passionate about.”
