More than 100 cases have been registered and investigated by the Child Protection in Cyberspace Unit at the Interior Ministry since the beginning of the year, it has emerged.
According to details released yesterday, the unit, which operates under the General Directorate of AntiāCorruption and Economic and Electronic Security, received 113 cases between the start of the year and April 15.
Officials noted a marked diversity in the nature of the cases and the patterns of offences, reflecting the evolving methods of criminal activity in the digital environment.
This development highlights the need to continuously enhance response mechanisms and readiness, in line with best security and legal practices, they said.
The unit also reported an intensification of targeted awareness campaigns, particularly within educational institutions, alongside expanded outreach efforts aimed at raising community awareness about cyberspace risks and prevention measures.
In addition, an integrated action plan is being prepared for implementation this year, focused on developing institutional capabilities, strengthening partnerships, and adopting best practices in child protection in cyberspace, in line with rapidly evolving challenges and to ensure the highest levels of protection for children online.
The GDN reported in September that 17 cases of online harassment and blackmail targeting children were handled by the authorities during the first half of last year. Children aged between 10 and 15 were the most vulnerable.
Child-safety experts advise keeping devices in shared family spaces, banning phones from bedrooms, limiting Internet time and monitoring unexplained physical or emotional changes in children, warning these may be signs of online abuse.
The unit called on parents to contact it if they suspect any activity that may pose a risk to children’s safety, either by visiting in person, calling the direct number (33523300), emailing (cpcu@interior.gov.bh), contacting the hotline of the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security (992), or through the MyGov application.
