A 148-metre-long container ship ran aground within metres of Bosporus waterfront mansions in Istanbul on Tuesday, narrowly avoiding a major disaster after losing control.
The Turkish-flagged vessel, the KAPPA, ran aground in Istanbul’s northern Sarıyer district following a reported steering failure. Türkiye’s Directorate General of Coastal Safety immediately dispatched tugboats, a dive team, and a fast rescue boat to the scene.
Maritime traffic through the Bosporus was suspended in both directions during the rescue operation. The vessel stopped just metres from historic waterfront residences, sparking fears of a catastrophic collision in one of the strait's most densely populated areas.
