A Bengaluru-based businessman lost more than INR 500,000 (approximately BD 1,972) after he accidentally downloaded malware disguised as a wedding invitation sent via WhatsApp.
Noor Nahid Khan received a WhatsApp message in April that read: "We're happy to invite you to our wedding. Kindly download the attached invitation for complete details of the ceremony. Your presence and blessings will make our special day truly memorable."
The message included an APK file which, once downloaded, unknowingly granted the sender access to his device. On 16 April, between 4.45 am and 4.54 am, more than INR 500,000 was allegedly siphoned from Khan's bank account through multiple transactions.
Investigations revealed that the APK file was used to install a mobile application from outside the Google Play Store without the user's knowledge. Bengaluru Police suspect that the message and file may be part of a larger cyber fraud operation.
An APK (Android Package Kit) file is used by the Android operating system for the distribution and installation of applications.
