Bahrain's shooting national teams made a positive start to their respective skeet events yesterday at the fourth GCC Games in Doha, Qatar.
Maryam Alasam headlined the performances of the kingdom’s hopefuls on the opening day of competition at Lusail Shooting Range.
Alasam put herself in prime position to challenge for a medal in the women’s skeet 75 targets contest, placing second after the first three of five rounds with a score of 68.
She trailed Reem Alsharshani of Qatar, who occupied first place with a 71 score, while Alsharshani’s compatriot Hajar Mohammed ranked third with a 66.
Two other Bahrainis were also within striking distance of the podium at the end of yesterday’s action, with Latifa Alnajem in fifth place and Fatema Almahasni in sixth – both on 65 scores.
Maryam Hassani completed the kingdom’s women’s shooters in the event in 11th with a score of 60 and two rounds to go.
Their results put Bahrain in second place on the women’s teams’ skeet ranking heading into today’s medal decider.
They are on a 193 score, while Qatar are currently first on 199 and Kuwait third on 188.
On the distaff, Bahrain’s men’s shooters put in a solid show in the first three rounds of their men’s skeet 75 targets competition.
Khaled Basheer placed 11th and Tammar Alwatt was 12th, both on scores of 68, while Bahrain Shooting Association president Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa was 17th on a 63 score.
Bahrain’s men ranked fourth in the teams’ standings with a 199 score heading into today’s final.
Kuwait lead with a 219 score, Saudi follow on 210, and Qatar are just ahead of Bahrain with a score of 200.
