BASKETBALL – THE Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA) announced last night that it has parted ways with senior men’s basketball national team head coach Georgios Vovoras less than a year after his appointment.
The BBA said in a statement on social media that it has terminated Vovoras’ contract following an agreement between both sides.
Vovoras took charge of the kingdom’s senior men’s squad in June of last year. The Greek tactician had previously coached with top clubs across Europe and was also a member of the technical staff of teams that participated in elite tournaments such as the Euroleague and Eurocup, in addition to the NBA Summer League in the US.
Meanwhile, the BBA also announced the termination of the contract of Vovoras’ assistant coach Ioannis Tsaousis.
The BBA statement, published in Arabic, added: “The association expresses its gratitude to the coach and his assistant for their time spent with the national team, wishing them good luck and success in their journey.”
Vovoras’ replacement has yet to be named by the BBA.
In his short stint with Bahrain, Vovoras guided the senior men’s national team to the bronze medals at the 44th William Jones Cup, held in July of last year in Chinese Taipei, with the participation of leading clubs and national teams from the Philippines, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Qatar, the UAE and hosts Chinese Taipei.
He also coached Bahrain at the 26th Arab Men’s Basketball Championship, hosted by the kingdom for the first time last August, but they came up just short of capturing the bronze medals after finishing fourth from the seven participating nations.
Vovoras was also set to helm the national team in the men’s basketball tournament of the fourth GCC Games in Doha, Qatar earlier this month, but it was called off.
