A man has been referred to the High Criminal Court for trial after he allegedly blackmailed a 17-year-old girl on social media, the Public Prosecution said yesterday.
Investigations were launched following a complaint filed by the victim’s mother.
Authorities said the defendant allegedly exploited the girl into exchanging photographs and inappropriate videos, before threatening to publish them unless she handed over money and gold jewellery.
The suspect was identified and arrested following extensive investigations.
During questioning, he reportedly admitted to the charges. Incriminating images were also recovered from his mobile phone. The first hearing in the case has been scheduled for June 22.
The Public Prosecution urged parents to closely supervise their children’s use of social media and to raise awareness about the risks of sharing personal images and videos with strangers. It also stressed that strict action will be taken against those involved in the blackmail or exploitation of children in the kingdom.
