Sir Garry Sobers, one of cricket’s greatest legends, passed away on Friday evening.
From the time I developed a passion for cricket in the early 1970s, he was among my most admired heroes, and he remained so throughout my life.
Whenever the highest individual Test score – 365 not out – is mentioned, Sir Garry is the first name that comes to mind. That remarkable record stood for 36 years until another West Indian great, Brian Lara, surpassed it with 375.
Sir Garry will also be remembered as the first cricketer to hit six sixes in an over in first-class cricket.
The cricketing world has lost one of its finest ambassadors, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations of cricketers and fans alike.
A famous quote says, “Heroes may leave this world, but true legends live forever in the hearts of those they inspired.”
Rest in peace, Sir Garry Sobers. Your innings will never be forgotten.
With heartfelt respect...
Cherian Mathews
