The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has affirmed that it continues to work closely with its member states and aviation partners to establish a global crisis management framework aimed at co-ordinating responses to threats facing civil aviation, stressing that aviation safety is non-negotiable.
The organisation made the remarks in response to questions from our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej regarding the repercussions of the Iranian attack that targeted civil air navigation systems responsible for managing Bahrain Flight Information Region (FIR) airspace using hostile drones.
ICAO said its top priority is to ensure the uninterrupted operation of international air transport services without compromising safety standards. It added that it is working with all relevant parties to develop and implement emergency measures to minimise disruptions that could affect international air traffic.
Meanwhile, Husain Al Shuail, Assistant Undersecretary for Civil Aviation Affairs at the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry, said the Civil Aviation Affairs sector responded immediately to the Iranian attack targeting one of the civil air navigation systems at Bahrain International Airport.
He explained that emergency response plans were activated from the outset, with immediate co-ordination among all relevant authorities.
Mr Al Shuail said specialised technical teams promptly assessed the situation and implemented the necessary technical measures. Repair work began without delay, alongside all required operational procedures to maintain the highest levels of safety and ensure an uninterrupted provision of air navigation services, enabling air traffic to continue without any significant impact on flights or overflight services.
He noted that flights and aircraft movements have continued as normal, reflecting the high level of preparedness of Bahrain’s air navigation system and the effectiveness of its emergency plans, which are regularly tested and updated.
He also highlighted the competence of the national workforce at Bahrain International Airport and their ability to respond efficiently to varying operational conditions and challenges.
