BASKETBALL – BAHRAIN’S senior men’s basketball national team wrapped up their campaign in a three-nation friendly tournament in Doha last night with an undefeated record in their two games.
The kingdom’s squad outclassed their counterparts from Saudi Arabia 82-58 yesterday at Al Janoub Arena in the Qatari capital. It was their second triumph in as many nights, after earlier defeating hosts Qatar 76-69 in their opening fixture on Thursday.
Qatar and Saudi face off today at 7pm at the same venue in the competition’s concluding fixture.
The Bahrainis’ tune-ups were part of their preparations for the first round of pre-qualifiers for the Fiba Asia Cup 2029. Qatar and Saudi, meanwhile, are gearing up to play in the ongoing second round of continental qualification for the Fiba Basketball World Cup 2027.
Bahrain, coached by Greek-Slovenian tactician Slobodan Subotic, now shift their focus to the pre-qualifiers, which are to be held in Dubai, the UAE, from Monday to September 1.
The nationals will be going up against Oman, Nepal, Kuwait, and the host Emiratis in Group A. They will be hoping to finish in the top three of their pool to move on to the second round of pre-qualifiers, to be played at the end of the year.
The Bahrainis are also getting ready to play in the men’s basketball tournament at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan next month.
