An individual was fined BD100,000 and four others were sentenced to prison terms ranging from six months to one year for trading in and selling spoiled and adulterated food products by putting them in new containers.
The Industry and Commerce Ministry announced the issuance of court rulings against the defendants associated with Bahrain Pride Trading Centre, identified as Shakeel Trading.
“The defendants traded and sold expired food products by repackaging them in new containers, changing their expiration dates, placing them in the establishment’s bags and distributing them in the markets.
“We would like to reaffirm our ongoing efforts to enforce compliance with commercial laws and regulations.”
According to the court rulings shared by the ministry, the first defendant, identified as Shakeel Ahmed, was fined BD100,000 for the charges against him, in addition to a BD3,000 fine for other unspecified charges.
Meanwhile, the second defendant, Kashif Su, along with the third defendant, Md Almoamen, and the fourth defendant, Bintu Das, were sentenced to six months in prison.
The fifth defendant, identified as Sabuj Lakhan, was sentenced to one year in prison.
All four expats will also be permanently deported from the kingdom upon the completion of their sentences.
“Adulterated and spoiled goods, materials and tools used to commit the crime will be confiscated and destroyed,” the ministry statement said.
“A summary of the judgement, along with the evidence, shall be published in two local daily newspapers, one of which must be in Arabic, immediately upon the judgement being final, at the expense of the convicted parties.
“After six months of administrative closure, premises under the establishment have been reopened.”
