CYCLING – BAHRAIN’S Mohammed Hassan Jawad made cycling history yesterday after winning a bronze medal at the Track Asia Cup 2026, taking place in Suphan Buri, Thailand.
Jawad secured his place on the podium in the junior men’s individual pursuit at Hua Mark Velodrome.
He clocked a mark of three minutes 37.529 seconds in the event, finishing not far behind gold medal winner Hussain Alsafr from Saudi Arabia, who triumphed in 3:31.248. Zeinolla Azamatuly from Kazakhstan took silver in 3:40.395.
Jawad’s bronze is the first-ever medal won by the kingdom in international track cycling, the Bahrain Cycling Association confirmed yesterday.
Jawad is part of a two-rider Bahrain squad competing at this year’s Track Asia Cup. They are amongst a field of more than 1,000 riders and officials representing 38 squads from 21 countries, which include national teams and independent cycling clubs.
The Bahraini pair prepared for the meeting with a training camp held in Shuzenji, Japan, where they honed their skills alongside elite cyclists and teams from around the world at the Union Cycliste Internationale’s (UCI) World Cycling Centre regional development satellite, located about 150 kilometres from Tokyo.
Aside from Bahrain, the other national sides are flying the flags of Singapore, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Australia, Malaysia, Macau, Indonesia, Philippines, India, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and hosts Thailand.
The clubs competing are from South Korea, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Australia, Indonesia, Sweden, the US, Cuba, Slovakia, and Thailand.
Along with individual pursuit, Track Asia Cup 2026 also features competition in keirin, team sprint, scratch, sprint, omnium, points race, and time trial, being held across various categories for elite men, elite women, junior men, and junior women.
It awards world ranking points that count towards qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
