HANDBALL – Bahrain and Qatar are set for an exciting showdown for gold tonight in the 11th Asian Men’s Youth Handball Championship in Amman, Jordan.
The under-19 tournament’s final is scheduled for a 6pm throw-off at Princess Sumaya Hall in the Jordanian capital.
It will be preceded by the bronze medal game, to be contested between Iran and South Korea at 4pm.
Both times are Bahrain.
The kingdom’s youth men’s handball national team will be gunning for their third title in the history of the competition.
They were continental youth champions in 2016 and in 2018 in their only other appearances in the gold medal game.
Aside from the two fixtures to determine the three podium finishers, placement matches will also be held today.
Hosts Jordan will take on Uzbekistan at 12noon for seventh overall on the final 10-nation standings, while Kuwait will lock horns with Saudi Arabia for fifth at 2pm.
Both times are also Bahrain.
Bahrain are looking to wrap up their championship campaign on a high note, after successfully securing one of four tickets to the 12th IHF Men’s Youth Handball World Championship, scheduled to be held July 29 to August 9 in 2027 at a to-be-confirmed host nation.
The Bahrainis qualified for the youth worlds for the seventh time, including for its fifth straight edition.
Meanwhile, the Bahrain Handball Federation (BHF) revealed yesterday that the national team’s goalkeeping coach Makrem Missaoui was involved in an accident at the team’s hotel during the tournament and was taken to hospital for treatment.
BHF national teams director and Bahrain’s delegation head in Amman Ismael Baqer wished Missaoui a speedy recovery and expressed his gratitude to Qatar’s national team delegation for their visit to check on Missaoui’s well-being.
