HANDBALL – Bahrain’s senior men’s handball national team are scheduled to depart for Cairo, Egypt today for an overseas training camp as part of their final preparations for the 20th Asian Games in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, starting later this month.
The kingdom’s squad are repeat silver-medallists in their competition, having lost to three-time defending champions Qatar in the final of the previous two editions of the Asiad – held in Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia in 2018 and then in Hangzhou, China in 2022.
The Bahrainis were also bronze-medallists in the 2014 tournament in Incheon, South Korea, but this time will be gunning for gold – especially after making history by winning their first-ever title earlier this year in the Asian Men’s Handball Championship, held in Kuwait City.
The nationals have already begun training under the supervision of their Swedish head coach Robert Hedin at the Bahrain Handball Federation Arena at Um Al Hassam Sports Complex.
Their final roster for this year’s Asiad has yet to be announced by the Bahrain Olympic Committee.
Bahrain will be competing in a tough Group B alongside South Korea, Kuwait, Iran, and Kazakhstan in the preliminary round. Group A features hosts Japan, China, Hong Kong, and Qatar.
The men’s handball tournament will be taking place at Toyoda Gosei Memorial Gymnasium in the city of Inazawa at Aichi Prefecture.
Action is scheduled to begin on September 19 and continue until September 29.
