The Sports City project in Sakhir has taken a new step towards implementation, with the Works Ministry launching yesterday a prequalification tender for contractors to carry out Package (A), covering the construction of the sports stadium and related works. The tender received 21 bids.
The tender aims to prequalify contractors based on their financial standing, technical capabilities and previous performance record.
The tender follows years of planning for the project. The government announced in 2023 that BD100.8m had been allocated for the project during 2023 and 2024, with BD48.7m allocated in 2023 and BD52.1m in 2024, in addition to funding from the Gulf Development Programme.
The project includes Bahrain’s largest sports stadium, with a capacity of up to 50,000 spectators, as well as training pitches, an athletics field and track, car parks and a media centre. It will also feature a multi-purpose indoor arena with a capacity of 10,000 spectators, indoor halls for individual sports, Olympic swimming pools, and associated facilities and services.
