The importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and the security of global waterways, particularly the Strait of Hormuz and Bab Al Mandab, was stressed as His Majesty King Hamad held talks with Greek leaders yesterday.
Both Bahrain and Greece highlighted that any arrangements concerning the waterways must be based on international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, protecting international trade and the smooth functioning of supply chains.
His Majesty, on an official visit to Greece, held talks with President Constantine Tassoulas and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during which the leaders discussed the historic relations between the two ancient maritime civilisations.
During their talks at the Presidential Mansion in Athens, His Majesty and President Tassoulas reviewed the growing bilateral partnership as well regional and international issues of common interest, particularly the latest developments in the Middle East.
“We highly appreciate Greece’s principled positions based on international law and regard your friendship as a source of support at a time when challenges are increasing and adherence to principles is becoming less common,” the King said.
The Greek President condemned the attacks by Iran against the kingdom.
In his meeting with Prime Minister Mitsotakis, His Majesty said the ties between Bahrain and Greece extend beyond their shared history and are centred on the security of maritime routes, freedom of trade and the stability of a region on which the world depends for energy security and supply chains.
