FOOTBALL – The Bahrain Football Association (BFA) has received an invitation from the Gulf Football Federation to participate in the next edition Gulf Cup for Veteran Players, which is scheduled to be hosted by Qatar from October 31 to November 6.
The eight-nation tournament follows the 27th Gulf Cup, or ‘Khaleeji 27’, which concluded earlier this week in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and won by the hosts.
In this regard, the BFA has assigned former national team director Abdulaziz Al Ashraf and former international player Ghazi Alkuwari to oversee the formation of a veterans’ team to participate in the veterans’ competition.
The BFA invites all former national team players who meet the participation requirements to attend the first training session, scheduled for Tuesday next week at the BFA pitches in Riffa, kicking off at 6pm.
The final roster will be selected according to regulations, which stipulate a list of 23 players, each of whom must be 40 years of age or older, with a maximum of 1986 as the birth year. Participating players must also have previously represented the national team in one of the previous Gulf Cup tournaments.
The tournament format is set to be similar to the first edition held in Kuwait, with the draw placing Bahrain in Group B alongside Qatar, the UAE, and Yemen.
Group A is composed of Saudi, Kuwait, Oman, and Iraq.
Matches are to be held over two halves, with each match lasting 40 minutes.
The first and second place winners from each group qualify for the semi-finals.
