A major conference bringing together dermatology experts to discuss key health issues, share expertise and explore ways to address emerging challenges kicked off in Manama yesterday.
The ninth edition of the Bahrain Dermatology, Laser and Aesthetics Conference and Exhibition, held at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence and Spa, was inaugurated in the presence of Government Hospitals chief executive officer Dr Mariam Al Jalahma, who attended alongside doctors and experts from the medical community in Bahrain and beyond.
This year’s programme attracted a higher number of attendees compared to last year, organisers revealed, bringing together close to 100 speakers under one roof to showcase the latest dermatology practices and cosmetic and surgery procedures.
The forum, which ends today, features lectures, hands-on workshops, and engaging discussions. Additionally, the accompanying exhibition is showcasing cutting-edge technologies, products and services.
The event also featured an expanded educational segment for dermatology residents.
Two renowned Bahraini medical professionals were honoured at the event. Prominent retired health official and former Health Ministry Under-Secretary Dr Abdulaziz Youssef Hamza won the Pioneer Award in Plastic Surgery and renowned Bahraini dermatologist Dr Khalil Al Arayedh, a leading authority in skin and cosmetic treatments, won the Pioneer Award in Dermatology.
Conference president Dr Ameen Al Awadhi praised the event as an achievement for the medical community in the region. He revealed that in addition to talks focused on dermatology, this year’s edition will feature sessions that cover the relationship between the field and other specialities, such as internal medicine, gynaecology and plastic surgery.
“We have expanded on the smaller programmes we had last year and are offering a full course for dermatology residents, which would be an educational event for those who are training to be dermatologists,” Dr Al Awadhi told the GDN.
“Our plastic surgery programme on Saturday is a full-day segment – it is almost a conference inside another conference. We have invited an even larger number of international guests and educators to speak,” he added.
Dr Al Awadhi delivered a session on Treatment Algorithms for Major Dermatologic Disorders yesterday.
Other topics explored were paediatric dermatology, aesthetic dermatology, androgenetic alopecia, skin barrier dysfunction management and psoriasis management, among others.
Today’s sessions include Collagen Banking in Modern Aesthetics: A Proactive Approach to Skin Ageing, Artificial Intelligence and the Ageing Face: What the Machine Sees, The Gut-skin Axix: Beyond the Surface of Dermatology and Medical Considerations in Drug-induced Dermatologic Reactions.
An extensive segment on plastic surgery will also take place today with sessions exploring diverse areas, from ethical practices and breast reduction to body dysmorphic disorder, wound complications after plastic surgery and more.
The conference nods to local initiatives focused on the field of dermatological advancement and knowledge exchange. The GDN previously reported about the ‘Love Your Skin 2’ event, organised by the dermatology department at Government Hospitals, which highlighted common dermatological conditions, as well as methods of prevention and treatment, while showcasing the specialised services offered by the dermatology department at Government Hospitals.
