Registration officially opened yesterday for those wishing to participate in the annual ‘fresh veg fiesta’, the popular and highly-anticipated 14th edition of the Bahrain Farmers Market.
Those wishing to take part are urged to sign up before the end of the month, said the Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry.
The market, that attracts customers from across Bahrain and the wider region, is being organised by the ministry in partnership with the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD).
Local Agricultural Production Director Jaafar Al Tajer confirmed that preparations are already underway to launched the market at its usual venue, the Budaiya Botanical Gardens, in a few weeks time.

Mr Al Tajer
“The market continues to support Bahraini farmers and promote local agricultural products by providing producers with direct marketing opportunities,” said Mr Al Tajer.
“It has become known for showcasing the diversity and quality of Bahrain’s agricultural produce, and supporting entrepreneurial ventures and productive families involved in the sector.
“Registration is open to farmers, agricultural companies, nurseries, apiaries, restaurants and cafés, date producers, entrepreneurs and productive families offering locally made value-added products derived from agricultural produce.
“The organising committee has prepared a comprehensive programme of accompanying events and activities, which will take place every Saturday throughout the season, offering visitors from all walks of life a distinctive experience.
“It serves as a national platform for supporting local farmers and producers by providing direct marketing opportunities for their products, encouraging diversity in local agricultural production, and supporting the national economy.
“It is also an attractive destination for shopping and family entertainment, making it one of the country’s most popular destinations, with visitor numbers continuing to grow year-on-year.”

Visitors at the previous edition
The previous edition attracted more than 220,000 visitors, and over 250 tonnes of locally grown produce was sold, with more than 100 varieties showcased and, as a result of popular demand, the market continued operating on Saturdays during Ramadan.
It featured the participation of 33 Bahraini farmers alongside agricultural companies, nurseries, date shops, bee keepers, productive families, entrepreneurs and small businesses.
A number of cultural, educational and family-oriented activities were held, including an opening week performances from Dar Al Budaiya Al Janoubiya Band.
There were also Little Farmer Activities where children could take part in agricultural learning activities designed to introduce them to farming and encourage interest in agriculture from a young age, alongside a farm animal introduction area.
A youth-oriented marketplace and workshop area formed part of the event’s wider programme, complementing the commercial stalls.
The season’s educational purpose extended beyond entertainment. Awareness activities about sustainable agriculture and food security were also held, with the event providing opportunities for consumers to learn about local produce and the people who grow it.
