YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES – BAHRAINI fencer Ritej Araoud was announced yesterday as the fourth athlete who will be flying the kingdom’s flag at the fourth Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, which gets underway on Saturday.
The kingdom’s delegation is set to be spearheaded by four athletes competing in three sports.
Ritej will be going for gold for Bahrain in the fencing women’s foil individual competition.
She joins swimmers Ali Hussain and Sara Alqarooni and wrestler Ali Mohammed Zaman in Dakar, where the best young sportsmen and women, aged 15 to 17 years old, will be representing more than 200 countries from around the world.
The swimming competitions will be the first to be held from November 1 to 6. Wrestling will follow on November 7 and 8, and then the fencing events will take place from November 8 to 12.
This Saturday’s opening ceremony will be held at the 50,000-capacity Stade Abdoulaye Wade du Senegal.
This year’s Youth Olympic Games is its fourth edition. Senegal is the first country on the African continent to be awarded the honour of hosting an Olympic sports event.
Bahrain participated in all three previous editions of the Youth Olympic Games, including in 2010 in Singapore; in 2014 in Nanjing, China; and in 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Bahrain have two medals from the event, both won in Nanjing, with now-international superstar Salwa Eid Naser having taken silver in the girls’ 400 metres and Dalila Gosa claiming bronze in the girls’ 1,500m in athletics.
