BASKETBALL – Bahrain's champion basketball club will join 11 others in a new format of the 2026-27 Fiba West Asia Super League (WASL), the Fiba regional office Asia announced yesterday.
The tournament is scheduled to tip off in December, and it will feature the 12-team field representing 10 countries – six apiece from the Gulf and West Asia sub-zones.
The Fiba regional office Asia stated that champion teams from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE will be joined by those from Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria in the group phase.
The kingdom’s squad will likely be 2025-26 Zain Bahrain Basketball League title winners Muharraq, although this has yet to be confirmed.
The participating clubs will be drawn into two groups of six – each comprising three teams from the Gulf and three from West Asia.
They will play the usual home and away, giving every club a 10-game group phase schedule.
At the end of the preliminaries, the clubs will be ranked within their respective sub-zones based on their results, regardless of the group in which they competed.
The top four teams from each sub-zone will advance to separate semi-finals to determine the Gulf and West Asia sub-zone champions.
The winners of the semis will progress to the final to decide the champions of the sub-zone and the losing semi-finalists will be involved in a play-off for the third place.
Under the new system, the top three teams from each sub-zone will then advance to the Fiba WASL Final Eight, where they will be joined by champions of India and Iran.
