FOOTBALL – Everton booked their place in the English League Cup quarter-final with a convincing 3-1 victory over Newcastle United in their last-16 encounter yesterday.
First-half goals from James Garner and Hayden Hackney, and a brilliant strike by Thierno Barry in the 69th minute sealed Everton’s lopsided win.
The hosts took the lead in the 34th minute when Garner capitalised on a defensive error to put Everton in front.
Everton doubled their lead just before the interval, with Hackney getting on the scoresheet in the 45th minute to cap an impressive first-half display.
After the referee played advantage following a foul on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Barry delivered an inviting cross from the left side of the box.
Hackney, positioned around six yards from goal, met the delivery with a first-time volley that flew into the net, marking his first goal for Everton.
The two-goal cushion left Everton firmly in control heading into half-time before Barry scored from the top corner.
