Historic Bahrain-British relations were in the spotlight as Bahrain’s Ambassador to the UK Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa met Prime Minister Theresa May, on the sidelines of the Conservative Middle East Council annual reception and gala lunch in London.
The ambassador conveyed the greetings of His Majesty King Hamad, His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister.
He expressed appreciation for her efforts to enhance relations between the two kingdoms during her term, wishing her success in her future career.
In her speech Prime Minister May highlighted the council’s work in reinforcing relations with the countries of the Middle East. She commended co-operation between Bahrain and the UK, evident in the work of the UK Naval Support Facility in Bahrain.
She also affirmed strong relations between the UK and the GCC countries, especially through trade exchange, which amounts to £30 billion a year, making the GCC a strategic partner and an important ally. She stressed the need to solve the Palestinian issue through a solution that satisfies both parties in compliance with international resolutions.
Shaikh Fawaz met senior officials and MPs during the reception, including former Minister of State for Middle East Affairs Alistair Burt, chairman of the Bahrain All-Party Parliamentary Group Colonel Bob Stewart, MP David Jones and Sir Geoffrey Tantum.
