A GIANT turtle stuck in menacing marine clay was rescued and released into the sea by a team of concerned Bahraini divers and animal activists.
A Bahraini woman spotted the traumatised turtle at Karbabad coast and contacted the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) and Bahrain Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA).
The SCE sprung into action along with a veterinarian who inspected the rasping reptile.
“The tide had receded and the turtle was stuck. Unfortunately a citizen who meant well dragged the turtle further up the coast which was full of clay,” said Bahrain Diving Volunteer Team (BDVT) president Khalid Al Saeed.
Relocated
“We hoped the tide would rise again so that the turtle could swim out on her own, but that didn’t happen.”
Mr Al Saeed told the GDN that the team, which also included representatives from both the SCE and the BSPCA, waited patiently until after 2am for the tide to reach its highest peak.
When Plan A failed, Plan B was put into action and the team set about relocating the turtle to another coastal area.
“I arrived at around midnight and drove as close to the turtle as possible and we used special equipment to lift it up,” he said.
“We took it close to Water Garden City where there is an open beach.
“We made sure that she wasn’t under any stress and we waited until we saw her dive deep into the water.
“The SCE and BSPCA have guided us through this entire operation and it went smoothly, thanks to the collaborative efforts of all those involved.”
