The Janabiya intersection has undergone a glorious green makeover as part of a national strategy to enhance and beautify strategic locations alongside major infrastructure and construction projects.
As part of phase one of the BD780,000 redesign – measuring 120,000sqm – various types of trees and flowering shrubs in geometric shapes have been planted.
Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf reviewed the progress of the project during a recent visit to the site and said: “It’s looking good and it’s going to get even better.”
Strategy
He was accompanied by the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry Under-Secretary for Municipal Affairs Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, director of the road operation and maintenance department Sayed Bader Al Alawi, and the head of the cosmetic plant production department, Abbas Arafat.
The minister has directed the team to intensify and increase the number of green areas and plant various types of flowering trees and shrubs with plants at the sides of the Janabiya intersection, which is one of the ministry’s major projects within its national strategy.
The area surrounding the intersection will be supported by irrigation networks and the establishment of agricultural drainage infrastructure for collecting water, in addition to operating and maintaining water fountains planned for the next phase.
Landscaping
“A number of shading trees have been cultivated in the open spaces using different types such as hibiscus, ficus and acacia, alongside flowering shrubs such as Indian jasmine and jatropha, which are distinguished by their bright flowers,” said Mr Khalaf.
“We used some types of cacti too and the surfaces have been covered with seasonal flowers, all distinguished by their tolerance to high temperatures, resistance to drought and high soil salinity.”
He added that the ministry has set within its strategy an integrated plan to increase the number of green areas with landscaping and beautification projects around bridges, streets, squares and other intersections across the kingdom.
