A man in a village called Ayiloor in Kerala, India, had been hiding his long-time lover in a small room in his family house for a span of 11 years.
Rahman Khani, 34, feared disapproval from his community and ran away with Sajita, 28, on February 2, 2010. He brought her to his house in Ayiloor, and they lived with his family for over a decade, unbeknownst to them.
He would lock the room whenever he went out and never let other family members enter the room. The window in the room was made into a covert exit for Sajita, who would escape at night to relieve herself of confinement.
Rahman would sometimes pass electric shock through his door handle to keep his mother, father and sister away from the room.
When Sajita disappeared in 2010, police conducted an investigation but never found anything.
In March of this year, Rahman and Sajita decided to move to their own place, a rented house in a neighbouring village, without telling his family.
The family then filed a missing person case, which led police to look for Rahman.
They found him in Nenmara and questioned him, and were then told he and his lover had moved to their own house three months past after hiding their relationship from their family for 11 years.
The police, unconvinced with Rahman's seemingly bizarre tale, travelled to Ayiloor to investigate the issue and reached the house where they had had their secret relationship.
Believing the couples' story, they summoned them to court, where they were granted permission to live together.
Thereafter, they returned to their new home and now enjoy a free life after 11 years of secrecy.
