Shura Council members yesterday approved amendments to the 1976 Social Insurance Law that would see family members being registered as company employees under the Social Insurance Organisation.
It will now be referred to Parliament for a second review after Shura omitted ‘family members should be actual contributors to business’, saying that the clause given by MPs is complicated and difficult to determine.
If MPs approve the omission, the law would be referred to His Majesty King Hamad for ratification.
Shura also rejected, for the second time, an amendment to the 2006 People with Disability Care, Rehabilitation and Employment Law.
It aimed to include second and third-degree caretakers of people with disabilities in its purview and accordingly give them two hours off daily. Currently, only first-degree caretakers have the benefit according to the law.
The Cabinet had earlier asked MPs to rethink the amendment, saying that it would harm employment of people with disabilities or their family members in the private sector.
The Shura Council rejected the move last year, backing the government’s sentiments.
Shura also approved the 2019 closing financial statement of the Future Generations Fund during the weekly session yesterday.
Meanwhile, a statement condemning remarks by the Lebanese Information Minister against Saudi Arabia and the UAE was read out by secretary general Osama Al Asfoor.
