A HUSBAND was ordered by the Lower Sharia Court to pay his estranged wife, who lives under his roof, a monthly alimony of BD40 following a lawsuit against him.
Lawyer Taqi Hussain Taqi, who represented the husband, said that the woman demanded BD450 per month – BD150 for herself and BD300 for her children.
In court documents, the Bahraini wife claimed she raised the expedited lawsuit because her Bahraini husband no longer supported the family.
She also requested that the court to give her custody of the children.
“According to the plaintiff (wife), the defendant (husband) stopped paying for her and her children’s expenses despite being in a well-paid job,” read court documents.
However, because the plaintiff and their children still lived with the defendant, the court ruled that he must already be covering the offspring’s expenses.
As such, the plaintiff’s requests for custody, alimony and child support could not be granted because the couple were not formally separated.
“The couple’s private life does not fall under the court’s specialisation and, therefore, the court cannot give a ruling on these requests,” read the documents.
“The verdict of this urgent court case is that the husband must pay BD40 monthly to the wife.”
Mr Taqi claimed the husband already transferred a monthly amount directly to his wife’s bank account. The lawyer said that these amounts covered various expenses including salon trips, phone bill, car registration and insurance bills.
He added that despite this verdict, litigation between the two was ongoing.
