MORE than 200 volunteers took part in clean-up efforts at Karranah Beach and removed more than 500kg of plastic which was sent for recycling.
A total of 2,885kg of general waste were removed in addition to 577kg of plastic, revealed CleanUp Bahrain co-founder and board chairman Ali Al Qaseer.
He added that the event was ‘a huge success and plans are underway to organise further clean-ups’.
“Having such a great turn-out to a clean-up campaign is the most rewarding thing for us as organisers,” he said.
“Not only do we get the pleasure of meeting new volunteers who genuinely care for the environment and seeing the direct environmental impact we can achieve together in a brief time – but also the most beautiful aspect of a clean-up campaign is that people from all walks of life take part and age is no limit.”
According to Mr Al Qaseer, the only access to the beach is through the neighbourhood with inadequate parking spaces available for volunteers so the group devised an efficient method to conduct the clean-up without disturbing area residents.
An organised route for shuttle buses was created to move participants from the meeting area – outside the village of Karranah – to the clean-up site at the beach.
“We will hopefully arrange a few more clean-ups before Ramadan and that will be based on the condition of the inspected beaches,” added Mr Al Qaseer.
