The Second Lower Criminal Court has fined a company owner BD103,000 and sentenced four Asian employees to prison terms ranging from six months to one year, followed by deportation, for trading in expired food products.
The defendants were convicted of possessing, distributing, and selling expired goods after tampering with expiry dates, as well as operating without the required licences. The court also ordered the confiscation and destruction of the adulterated products, along with the equipment used in the violations. Two company warehouses will be closed for six months.
The case stemmed from a report received by the Public Prosecution from Hamad Town Police Station, following a tip-off alleging that expired food items were being repackaged inside a company warehouse.
The report indicated that expiry dates were altered before the products were redistributed for sale. Judicial officers from the Industry and Commerce Ministry inspected the premises, where they seized large quantities of expired food products that had been relabelled for distribution.
Authorities also identified another warehouse being used for food storage in addition to unlicensed carpentry work and vehicle repair activities.
