Bahrain has made significant progress under the Afforestation Plan, with 2.45 million trees planted, reaching 68 per cent of the 2035 target.
Mangrove planting has also surpassed expectations, reaching 139pc of the target with 2.23m seedlings planted.
The development was revealed during a meeting between His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who briefed him on progress to date on the Afforestation Plan and the Bahrain Mangroves Initiative.
HRH Prince Salman commended the efforts and continuous follow-up of Shaikh Mohammed, highlighting their significant contribution to the success of the initiatives and the spirit of Team Bahrain.
He said the initiatives exceeded the targets set for environmental plans, supporting the kingdom’s development, and enhancing environmental security, in line with the visions of His Majesty King Hamad.
HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister also expressed appreciation to all those involved in implementing the Afforestation Plan and the Bahrain Mangroves Initiative for their dedication and efforts in advancing environmental projects and achieving their intended objectives.
He praised Bahrain’s achievements in agricultural innovation and excellence, which included the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation and the Arab Government Excellence Award, as well as the recognition of four Bahraini villages under the FAO initiative honouring agricultural villages.
HRH Prince Salman highlighted the importance of continuing to adopt and implement sustainable initiatives that enhance performance indicators in the kingdom’s agricultural sector, contributing to environmental preservation and the protection of natural resources.
Shaikh Mohammed commended the royal patronage and support extended to environmental and agricultural plans and programmes by His Majesty, whose directives, he said, are critical to advancing the kingdom’s sustainable development, preserving natural resources, and strengthening environmental security.
He expressed his gratitude for HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister’s unwavering support and pioneering developmental vision, which have contributed to advancing the agricultural sector and environmental sustainability.
He expressed his appreciation to Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of the King, Supreme Council for Women president and National Initiative for Agricultural Development advisory Council chair, for national programmes aimed at expanding green spaces and reinforcing the concepts of agricultural sustainability.
These efforts reflect her vision and commitment to supporting development initiatives that contribute to environmental preservation, enhanced food security and sustainable development, he added.
Shaikh Mohammed affirmed that the indicators achieved by Bahrain in the Afforestation Plan and the Bahrain Mangroves Initiative, as well as the prestigious international and regional awards they have received, reflect HRH Prince Salman’s support.
