Many new residential neighbourhoods in Bahrain lack small public parks, while older residential areas, especially those built as government housing projects, have at least one small park for every few blocks. Although these parks are not well maintained in many areas, the concept is essential for communities across Bahrain.
Even though shopping centres and cafés are becoming increasingly common in areas such as Riffa, Saar and Janabiya, these neighbourhoods have very few open spaces where residents can walk outdoors and take their children. Riffa Views, however, is an exception, with its thoughtful design that incorporates parks and open spaces between residential areas.
Children need safe outdoor spaces within walking distance of their homes. Outdoor play is healthier than spending long hours on electronic devices, and it is also more affordable than indoor play centres.
Parents spend a great deal of time and energy keeping their children occupied with afternoon lessons and activities, mainly to reduce their dependence on electronic devices.
Moreover, modern homes are becoming smaller, and private courtyards are disappearing due to rising property prices. As a result, the need for public parks is greater than ever.
We hope the relevant authorities will ensure that every new residential development includes a small public park. It is not too late to introduce these green spaces into newer neighbourhoods. Even a modest park would improve the quality of life for families and encourage children to be more physically active.
