I’m exhausted! It’s just been one great big orgy of sport the last few weeks. Don’t get yourself too worried about me though, I am talking about watching it, not playing it.
Since I picked up a devastating injury playing pickleball a few weeks ago my sporting prowess has only extended to trips between the kitchen, fridge and sofa.
There has been an avalanche of sport to watch with the obvious one being the World Cup. That is being held in the Americas and, as I mentioned a few weeks ago, means staying up late or arising early to watch most matches.
I did get up early to watch the England v Mexico match the other day which it was well worth it ... but a few days earlier I got up to watch the Scotland v Brazil clash and, when I switched it on and found it was already 1-0 to Brazil, I went straight back to bed.
But now Wimbledon is on, which means two channels of tennis from midday to midnight. Normally, by the middle of week one, all British hopes have gone and so we don’t really need to bother. But as one player had his own Fery-story up to Friday’s semi-final, it had us all glued to the TV. If that wasn’t enough, the rugby world has invented a new competition between the North and South hemispheres which gives us rugby for three Saturdays in July and three in November and, as each game is staggered, we have watching opportunities from 10am till midnight.
This all means that in the following few days we have needed to catch-up with the tennis and football we missed. Oh, I forgot the British Formula 1 Grand Prix was on last weekend as well.
The tennis will be finished today and we will be watching the men’s final with the obligatory strawberries and cream washed down by our favourite fizzy drink, then we will have to contend with a few more games of footie before next weekend gives us the British Open golf championship which leads up to a mega Sunday of July 19. The golf should play itself to its climax by about 9.30pm which just gives us enough time for a pie and a cup of Bovril before the World Cup Final kicks off at 10pm. So, that should finish around midnight, unless it goes to extra time and penalties, and if it’s won by a team we support then late night celebrations and the head on the desk again on Monday morning.
During all this time the Tour de France is pedalling its way around La République and there are many differing variations of cricket being played, from One Day to T20 to The Hundred. And, just when we thought it was safe to get off the sofa, the European football seasons start up again with round one of the Scottish League Cup having already been played yesterday.
When all these major sporting events have run their course, my injuries should have all cleared up and so I will be able to get back to participating instead of vegetating. Inshallah.
