Nominations have opened for the prestigious King Hamad Award for Coexistence and Tolerance.
The nomination dates for the $1 million inaugural edition of the award were announced by the King Hamad Global Centre for Coexistence and Tolerance (KHGC) yesterday.
Individuals and institutions around the world can file their nominations until October 10 through the award’s official website.
Established pursuant to Royal Order (32) of 2024, the award is an international initiative that embodies the values rooted in Bahrain’s history and civilisation, including openness to all civilisations, religions, and cultures and the promotion of coexistence.
It reflects the kingdom’s vision of advancing global peace and coexistence, while encouraging pioneering work in dialogue among civilisations.
The award recognises individuals and institutions that have made exceptional and well-documented contributions to advancing a culture of tolerance and coexistence, promoting dialogue and mutual respect, and creating a positive and sustainable impact on communities.
Alongside the monetary prize, recipients receive a certificate of recognition and a medal, presented at a ceremony held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, who is the honorary president of the award.
Transportation and Telecommunications Minister and KHGC board of trustees chairman Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, who is also chairman of the award’s judging committee, said that the inaugural edition embodies the vision of His Majesty in firmly establishing the values of coexistence, tolerance and mutual respect.
It also aims to support international efforts to build more cohesive and stable societies.
The jury comprises Bahraini and international figures with expertise in political, parliamentary, human rights, academic, religious and international co-operation.
Alongside Dr Shaikh Abdulla as chair, its members include former Hungarian President and former minister of family affairs Katalin Éva Novák; His Majesty’s adviser for scientific and cultural affairs Hala Al Ansari; Shura Council Human Rights Committee chairman Dr Mohammed Al Khuzaei, MP Jaleela Hassan; former Inter-Parliamentary Union secretary general Martin Chungong; Dr Chinmay Pandya, Pro Vice Chancellor of Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya and a prominent figure in the global spiritual organisation All World Gayatri Pariwar.
