The Kuwait Court of Appeals sentenced a Syrian man to seven years in prison and ordered him to repay KD600,000 (BD732,956), in addition to a fine of twice that amount, bringing the total financial penalty to KD1.8 million (BD2.19m), after he was convicted of forgery and citizenship fraud.
According to local media reports, the case dates back to 1971, when the defendant’s father allegedly paid a Kuwaiti citizen to register his son in his citizenship file, effectively enabling him to obtain Kuwaiti nationality. The Kuwaiti citizen has since died.
The defendant later went on to serve in a military position at the Ministry of Defence. The alleged fraud only came to light recently following a dispute between him and his Syrian brothers, who reported him to the authorities, leading to his arrest.
During questioning, the defendant confessed that he had known about the circumstances surrounding his registration in the citizenship file since 2000.
