Bahrain have ended their decades-long wait to secure the men’s handball gold medal at the Asian Games.
The kingdom’s senior men’s national team made history today after being crowned champions of their sport at the 20th Asiad in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The Bahrainis claimed their title after edging past bitter rivals Qatar 33-32 in a thrilling final.
The Qataris entered this year’s Asian Games as three-time defending champions and had beaten Bahrain in the men’s handball final of the past two editions.
But inspired by veteran skipper Hussain Al Sayyad – and behind the strong play of Bahrain’s talented supporting cast of Mohammed Habib Nasser, Ahmed Kadhem, Ahmed Fadul, Hasan Madan, and Jassim Khamis – the Bahrainis have finally gotten over the hump to bring the kingdom’s medal tally in Aichi-Nagoya to 19 medals, including 11 gold.
