A middle-aged ex-convict has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing a delivery driver’s motorcycle at knifepoint after the driver refused to let him take the bike for a joyride.
The 43-year-old Bahraini was found guilty by the High Criminal Court of theft under threat of violence after intimidating the 21-year-old Pakistani courier into giving up the vehicle.
The defendant, who has previous criminal convictions, terrorised the driver one April afternoon while he was on the job.
“It was 4pm and I was making a delivery in Isa Town,” the expat testified, recounting the incident.
“I realised that the delivery address given to me was wrong, so I stopped near a building to contact the customer.
“Out of nowhere, the defendant approached me and demanded to take my motorcycle for a ride. I declined because I had many orders and customers to reach.
“He took out a knife from his trouser pocket and pointed it at me, threatening to assault me if I didn’t move away from the bike. Fearing for my life, I backed away, and the defendant got on the motorcycle and drove off.”
After the incident was reported to police, an investigation was launched and a detective identified the defendant with the help of an informant.
The expat victim later confirmed the defendant’s identity after being shown his photograph.
The 43-year-old was subsequently brought before the Public Prosecution, which referred the case to court.
He was found guilty of robbery and of using a weapon to force the victim to abandon the motorcycle, which belonged to his employer, before making off with it.
