A TEAM of Bahraini students has drawn inspiration from the Education Ministry’s new elective course called Gaming 100 to design and develop their own video game.
Third-year students Habib Yaqoob, Hussain Jassim and Abbas Fadhil from Al Taawon Secondary Boys School used skills acquired through the course to transform their ideas into a project that integrates programming, design and creative thinking.
Their game combines one-on-one combat with co-operative play against virtual characters, set within an interactive environment filled with progressive challenges, a variety of weapons, and diverse character abilities.
It also includes an online multiplayer feature, enhancing interactivity and expanding options for group play.
Describing of the development process, the team explained that, with the help of their computer science teacher, Jaafar Qambar, they focused on establishing core gameplay mechanics before refining visual details and character designs.
Programming tools were used to build the game, along with artificial intelligence tools to generate character concepts.
They also drew inspiration from their physics classes by implementing questions based on their coursework. Once the questions are answered, players can unlock advantages to help them during gameplay.
Launched earlier this year by Education Minister Dr Mohammed Mubarak Juma, Gaming 100 elective course, offered in public secondary schools, aims to foster students’ technical and creative skills.
As reported by the GDN, more than 1,300 government school students have enrolled in the course, which takes them on a journey through the history and culture of video games, beginning with the industry’s origins in the 1970s.
The book’s five chapters also discuss game mechanics and genres, art and coding, esports (electronic sports), as well as careers in gaming.
Private schools are also able to adopt the course as part of their curriculum.
Mr Juma also revealed that work is already underway on Gaming 101, which will focus more deeply on artificial intelligence in video games.
