The Philippines raised the alert level at the Mayon volcano in the central province of Albay today after a "moderately explosive eruption."
Residents have been advised to evacuate the 3.7 miles Permanent Danger Zone and follow evacuation and safety instructions due to higher likelihood of lava flows and hazardous pyroclastic density currents.
PHIVOLCS also urged civil aviation authorities to advise pilots to avoid flying near the volcano's summit, warning that ash from sudden eruptions could pose a hazard to aircraft.
The Philippines lies along the Pacific "Ring of Fire", a belt of volcanoes and fault lines that is prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
