BAHRAIN has won international acclaim, once again, with a top financial magazine ranking the country as the second best in the world in tackling Covid-19.
Nikkei Asia’s Covid-19 Recovery Index assesses the pandemic response of 121 countries based on nine factors, divided into three categories: infection management, vaccine rollouts and mobility. The higher the ranking, the closer a country is to recovery – with low infections, higher inoculation rates and less-strict social distancing measures.
Bahrain scored 72, only one point behind Malta, the top scorer, and is ahead of the UAE (71pc) and Saudi Arabia (70.5pc).
According to Nikkei, the methodology for the latest ranking was adjusted to reflect vaccination progress worldwide.
Bahrain launched its vaccination campaign on December 17 last year. A total of 1,125,718 people have been double-jabbed until Wednesday. This accounts for 75pc of the total population of 1.5 million.
A total of 1,166,815 people (77.7pc) have taken at least one dose of a vaccine while 338,192 have also taken the booster dose.
“Instead of looking at the share of people who have received at least one dose, we are now grading countries and regions based on the share of people who have been fully vaccinated with two shots,” the report said.
The score is the sum of three categories and nine subcategories, each with a maximum of 10 points.
Infection management includes confirmed cases of Covid-19 versus peak case count, confirmed cases per capita and tests per case.
Vaccine rollouts cover total vaccine doses given per capita, new doses given per capita, and share of people who have been fully inoculated.
Mobility deals with community mobility, Oxford stringency index, and flight activities.
