THE education sector in Bahrain is set for a major facelift under a 10-year plan.
This includes changes to subjects taught, new promotion criteria for teachers and 18 new schools and facilities starting next year.
Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi told MPs during their weekly session yesterday that the plans were dynamic and would address local needs and changes in the sector at the global level.
“The current Family Education subject will be changed to Life Skills,” he added.
“Promotion criteria for teachers will be changed and 18 new schools will be built.”
The minister was responding to three questions by MPs.
In another response, Dr Al Nuaimi said that children completing six years of age after August 31 would be considered for acceptance in grade one at government schools depending on available seats.
“We used to accept September normally and admitted those from October to December depending on seats available, but with Covid-19 seating restrictions have now moved the September criteria to the second category.
“Those missing out could be admitted to grade two if they pass the required tests in the next year to ensure they are not a year behind.”
MPs voted unanimously on a Royal decree issued during the National Assembly recess amending the 1986 Bahrain University Set-up Law to separate the boards of the Higher Education Council and the university to allow more scrutiny and monitoring and referred it to the Shura Council.
Meanwhile, MPs also voted unanimously on two government-drafted bills to approve the unified GCC Patent Law and the set-up law for the Arab Union for Natural Reserves and referred both to Shura.
A stalemate on amendments to the 2015 Commercial Registrations (CRs) Law that would see closed and public shareholding companies listed under Bahrain Bourse has again postponed a decisive vote on the matter until next week’s session.
The number of MPs with or against the move was equal for the fifth time since December last year.
Khalid Bu Onk demanded Speaker Fouzia Zainal mentions in records that she tore a request by 10 MPs to hold a debate on doubling Value Added Tax from 5 per cent to 10pc two weeks ago and clarifying it was her choice.
Ms Zainal instructed that it be mentioned.
