LAST month was slightly warmer than normal, with 11 days of rain registered.
The monthly weather report by the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry’s meteorological directorate yesterday also highlighted that above average precipitation was registered last month, with an accumulation of 53.3mm rain at Bahrain International Airport (BIA).
This goes on record as the eighth highest monthly total rainfall for January since 1902.
“This was approximately three times more than the long-term normal for January which is 18.1mm,” added the report.
“The highest monthly total rainfall recorded was in January 1959, at 135.9mm.
“The highest day with precipitation was 19.8mm on January 5 at BIA with the highest daily total of precipitation for January was 49.1mm which occurred on January 22, 1959.”
The total monthly precipitation recorded for January at Hoorat A’ali was 72.2mm, followed by 71mm at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC), 70.6mm at Bahrain University, 67.4mm at Durrat Al Bahrain, 63.6mm at Sitra, and 48.8mm at King Fahad Causeway.
Meanwhile, the mean maximum temperature for the month was 20.1C – 0.6C below the long-term normal.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 24.4C which occurred on January 17 at BIA and 24.4C was recorded at Bahrain University on January 31.
“The mean minimum temperature of the month was 15.7C which is 1.2C above the long-term normal,” said the report.
“The temperatures were below average from January 10 to 12 due to the northwesterly winds and the cloudy conditions affecting the kingdom on those days and the rain showers associated with some days.
“The lowest temperature recorded was 13.4C on January 12 at BIA but 11.3C was recorded on the same night at Durrat Al Bahrain.”
The lowest temperature ever recorded in Bahrain was 2.7C at BIA on January 20, 1964.
Meanwhile, the mean relative humidity for January was 71 per cent whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 82pc and the mean minimum relative humidity was 60pc.
The report also highlighted that the mean maximum relative humidity was 93pc, recorded on January 16 and 17, while the minimum relative humidity was 25pc, recorded on January 30.
“The total hours of sunshine for the month were 176.2 hours.
“The highest monthly total hours of sunshine for January was 286.2 hours recorded in 2021.
“The mean wind speed for January was nine knots with prevailing winds 36pc from the northwest direction.”
Gust winds reached 32 knots on January 17 at BIA but 34 knots were recorded on the same day at King Fahad Causeway.
Easterly to south-easterly winds accounted for 21pc of the observation.
