Shaikh Ebrahim Centre for Culture and Research chairperson Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa has been recognised by the Japanese government for her contributions to boosting cultural ties between Bahrain and Japan.
The former Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities president will be awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, as part of the Japanese government’s 2023 Spring Imperial Decorations.
“Shaikha Mai has played an important role in strengthening the Japan-Bahrain relationship,” the Japanese Embassy in Bahrain noted in a statement.
“During her tenure, she provided support for cultural programmes of the Japanese Embassy and made significant contributions to organising successful events.
“In August 2013, late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Bahrain, and she played an important role of escorting him and explaining about the National Museum.
“At the time of the Maki-e exhibition organised by the Japanese Embassy in 2014, her strong interest in Maki-e helped Bahraini media introduce the traditional Japanese art to people and more than 10,000 visitors enjoyed the exhibition,” it added.
